Use InterPrint to print a file from your Macintosh on any UNIX® PostScript printer that responds to the LPR command.
◊ PostScript is a popular page description language developed by Adobe Systems, Inc. that allows a computer to translate pages in a device-independent manner.
◊ LPR is a UNIX command used to print a file to a printer or another output device. It is also the protocol used to address a UNIX printer.
Before using InterPrint, you must install it on your Macintosh and configure it. After it is installed and configured, you can select InterPrint in the Chooser and print from any application as if you were printing directly to a LaserWriter®.
InterPrint includes two utility applications, LPR Monitor and LPR Send. LPR Monitor allows you to monitor and remove your print jobs after they have been sent to a queue. LPR Send is a System 7 drag-and-drop application you can use to print your PostScript or text files. See Chapter 3, InterPrint Utilities, for more information on LPR Send and LPR Monitor.
◊ You can send your file to other output devices such as display screens. However, throughout this manual, we use the term printer to represent all output devices.
2.1 Installing InterPrint
The Apple Installer utility is included with this package to simplify installation of InterPrint. InterPrint automatically installs or upgrades MacTCP during installation, if necessary. To configure MacTCP after installation, see the section Configuring MacTCP in the book About Networking: A Guide to TCP/IP and MacTCP.
The Easy Install dialog, shown below, contains the following options:
Install • begins Easy Install.
Eject Disk • ejects the current disk (displayed at the bottom of the Installer window).
Switch Disk • changes the disk where InterPrint will be installed.
Customize • allows you to install InterPrint based on your own specific needs.
Help • gives installation information.
Quit • cancels installation.

To load InterPrint to your hard drive using the Apple Installer utility:
1. Insert the InterPrint Installation disk into your disk drive.
2. Double-click the Installer icon in the InterPrint Installer window.
‚àö The Easy Install dialog, shown below, appears indicating if it will install InterPrint, its utilities, and MacTCP.
 
◊ Be sure to note if MacTCP Software is being installed. MacTCP must be configured if it has been installed.
3. Click Install.
√ If InterPrint’s version of MacTCP is not already part of your system, it is automatically installed along with InterPrint. The installer prompts you either to quit or restart.
4. Quit the application or restart your Mac.
◊ If InterPrint has installed MacTCP for you, you must configure it after installation. See the section Configuring MacTCP in the book About Networking: A Guide to TCP/IP and MacTCP for information on configuring MacTCP.
5. Check that all new items were installed properly. See the lists below for installed items and their locations for System 6 and 7.

◊ If you installed InterPrint while running System 6, and have upgraded to System 7, reinstall InterPrint to have LPR Send installed into your InterPrint Extras folder on your hard disk.
6. Select Chooser from the Apple menu.
‚àö The Chooser appears, displaying the InterPrint icon, shown below.
 
7. Click the InterPrint icon.
‚àö The dialog shown below appears.
 
8. Personalize your copy of InterPrint by entering your name, the name of your organization, and the key. The key is located on the Product Access Key Card included in the software binder of your InterPrint package. All fields must be completed.
◊ Enter your key exactly as it appears on the key card. The key is case-sensitive. Use uppercase and lowercase letters to match the key. The key card shows a full example of the character set used to print the key. Consult this table if you have any problems reading your key.
9. Click the Validate button. Validate is not active until the entire key is entered. Click Disable at this point if you have decided not to configure InterPrint.
‚àö If you have entered a valid key, the dialog closes and the Chooser dialog, shown below, is displayed.
 
2.2 Configuring InterPrint
When you configure InterPrint, you need to specify certain user preferences, such as your user name and host name. You also designate which LPR print server your Macintosh will direct files to for printing. For each printer, you assign a name that identifies it and enables it to be selected in the Chooser. By entering valid print queue names, you configure printers to use with InterPrint. The following sections guide you in configuring InterPrint.
◊ A print queue is a directory that holds output designated for the printer until the printer can receive it. By extension, it is the name by which you access a printer. In most references in this manual, the term printer is used to include the print queue.
◊ Because InterPrint does not use any AppleTalk protocols commonly associated with the Chooser, you do not need to select an AppleTalk Zone in the Chooser dialog. InterPrint also does not require AppleTalk to be active.
When configuring for InterPrint, use the InterPrint pop-up menu, shown below, which is labeled Add Queue… in the Chooser.
 
This menu contains the following items:
Add Queue… • allows you to add printers to InterPrint’s LPR Queue list (see Section 2.2.2, Adding an LPR Queue).
Remove Queue… • deletes the selected printer from the LPR Queue list (see Section 2.2.3, Removing an LPR Queue).
Edit Queue… • allows you to edit information on the selected printer (see Section 2.2.4, Editing an LPR Queue).
Preferences… • sets user information for InterPrint (see Section 2.2.1, Setting your InterPrint Preferences).
Font Query List… • allows you to specify what PostScript fonts are installed on a printer (see Section 2.2.5, Using the Font Query List).
Valid Character… • allows you to set which characters are sent to the printer as ASCII and which are converted to escape sequences (see Appendix B, Troubleshooting).
◊ Typically, you will not need to use this dialog.
Background Printing • when checked, allows you to perform other tasks while printing occurs in the background.
◊ This item is not available under System 6 running Finder, but is available if you are running MultiFinder.
About InterPrint™… • gives information about InterPrint, including your product serial number.
2.2.1 Setting your InterPrint Preferences
To configure InterPrint preferences:
1. Select Preferences… from the InterPrint pop-up menu.
‚àö The Preferences dialog, shown below, is displayed.
 
2. In the User Name field, type your user login for the server that you send files from.
3. In the Host Name field, type the name of the server that you send files from.
◊ The Host Name must be a valid IP address or host name that resolves to a valid IP address and must be recognized by the print server as a valid source of print requests.
4. Check Print Banner Pages if you want an introductory descriptive page to be printed along with your document. The contents of this page depend on the LPD (line printer daemon) being used.
5. Check Send Mail When Printed if you want to receive a mail message notifying you when your document has been printed or if printing has failed.
◊ Mail will be sent to User Name at Host Name. In the figure above, mail will be sent to kiki@intercon.com.
◊ Ask your System Administrator if Print Banner Pages and Send Mail When Printed are available on your server and are turned on.
6. Click OK to save your preferences. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without saving your changes.)
2.2.2 Adding an LPR Queue
From the InterPrint pop-up menu, select Add Queue… to add a printer to the LPR Queue list.
To add an LPR queue:
1. Select Add Queue… from the InterPrint pop-up menu, repeated below.
 
‚àö The Add Queue dialog, shown below, is displayed.
 
2. In the Queue Name field, name the queue.
◊ Although all characters are acceptable in the Queue Name field, we suggest you use something similar to the name of your printer for easy reference.
3. In the Server field, type the name of the host (typically a UNIX host) that is acting as your print server.
◊ For a host to be used as a server, it must be running LPD or a functional equivalent that conforms to RFC1179, Berkeley's initial LPR implementation.
4. In the Queue field, type the printer’s official print queue.
◊ The print queue for your printer can usually be found in the /etc/printcap file on the server. Or ask your System Administrator for the official print queue.
5. Click OK to save your changes. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without saving your changes.)
‚àö The printer you added appears in the LPR Queue list in the Chooser, shown below.
 
2.2.3 Removing an LPR Queue
To remove a printer from the LPR Queue list:
1. Highlight a queue name from the LPR Queue list in the Chooser, shown above.
2. Select Remove Queue… from the InterPrint pop-up menu.
‚àö A confirmation dialog, shown below, is displayed.
 
3. Click OK to remove the queue. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without removing a queue.)
2.2.4 Editing an LPR Queue
To modify information for an InterPrint printer:
1. Highlight a queue name from the LPR Queue list in the Chooser.
2. Select Edit Queue… from the InterPrint pop-up menu, shown below.
 
‚àö The Edit Queue dialog, shown below, is displayed.
 
3. Edit the Queue Name, Server, and Queue fields as necessary (see Section 2.2.2, Adding an LPR Queue).
4. Click OK to save your changes. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without saving your changes.)
2.2.5 Using the Font Query List
When you use InterPrint, there is no way to obtain font information directly from a printer; however, the printer driver needs to know what is available on the printer. Select Font Query List… from the InterPrint pop-up menu to identify the fonts on each printer configured for InterPrint. The list contains the 35 PostScript fonts most commonly found on laser printers. You can add fonts to the list or remove them to customize the list for each printer.
◊ Ask your System Administrator for the list of fonts that are actually installed on each printer you configure. If your entries in the Font Query List do not match the fonts installed on the printer, documents may print with incorrect or bit-mapped fonts.
To edit the Font Query List:
1. Highlight a print queue from the LPR Queue list in the Chooser.
◊ Be sure to highlight the correct queue. You cannot revert automatically to the previous font list.
2. Select Font Query List… from the InterPrint pop-up menu.
√ The Font Query List, shown below, is displayed, with the printer’s queue name at the top of the dialog.
 
3. To remove a font, select it and click Remove.
‚àö The font name is removed from the list.
4. To add a font, type the proper PostScript font name in the field provided and click Add.
‚àö The font name is added to the list.
5. Click Done to save your changes and close the dialog.
◊ If you do not select a print queue before selecting Font Query List…, the dialog contains a list of default fonts. You can customize this list so it becomes the default for all new queues.
2.3 Using Balloon Help
InterPrint provides extensive on-line Balloon Help in the System 7 environment. When Balloon Help is active, a balloon appears for all user interface items including check boxes, menu items, or text fields. Each balloon contains instructions for using these items.
To locate Balloon Help:
1. Click the Balloon Help icon, shown below, on the right of the menu bar.
 
‚àö The Balloon Help menu is displayed and toggles between activated and deactivated items, shown below.
 
To activate Balloon Help:
1. Select Show Balloons from the Balloon Help menu, shown above.
To deactivate Balloon Help:
1. Select Hide Balloons from the Balloon Help menu, shown above.
2.4 Using InterPrint
To access InterPrint:
1. Select Chooser from the Apple menu.
‚àö The Chooser is displayed.
2. Click the InterPrint icon.
‚àö The contents of the Chooser change, shown below.
 
3. Select a queue name from the LPR Queue list.
4. Click the close box to close the dialog.
‚àö If you have changed print drivers, a confirmation dialog may appear instructing you to select Page Setup in the application you are using before printing any files.
5. Take any special action requested in the confirmation dialog.
6. Print your document as usual.
◊ When you select InterPrint in the Chooser, InterPrint automatically adjusts the memory allocation of PrintMonitor to 150K. If you have a larger memory partition than 150K, InterPrint makes no adjustments.
